Can you put a date on this Ampeg Gemini?

In fact, it was likely that your parents were steering you in the direction of accordion lessons. The Beatles — and of course others — stopped all that. Suddenly, electric guitars were 1 on every kids Christmas list. Companies that had been manufacturing Accordions for 20 years, retooled for electric guitars. EKO was at the forefront, and within 2 years they were shipping over 10, electric guitars to USA per year. Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Rickenbacker… these were all too expensive for our parents to buy for us.

Fender Twin (The Evil Twin)

This is one of the most frustrating questions from the MIJ collector. People often make the mistake of citing the American or European importer as the ‘maker’ of the guitar, when in fact several Japanese manufacturers were producing badged guitars out of their plants and shipping them to America and Europe to sell.

Japanese manufacturers made multiple badges at the same plant, many of whom resemble each other closely. Some manufacturers merged or changed hands over the years which added to the confusion, sometime merging with another maker, only to pick up their name later. In some cases a manufacturer would farm out production to various manufacturers, making it still more difficult to know who made the guitar in your hands.

Jersey Shore ok, more searching.. The Gemini I was a two-channel 1×12 amp with a cathode-biased watt power section. Although reverb was only available on channel 1, there are evidently examples of a factory modification that put a reverb control for channel 2 on the back of the amp. The Gemini II was a two-channel same preamp as the I 1×15, with a fixed-bias watt power section derived from the earlier cathode-bias design.

There was also a Gemini IV, although there were very few made. It was 1×12″ and fairly quickly got renamed the Rocket 2, except that it had four input jacks instead of the Rocket 2’s two. Both it and the Rocket 2 had that really strange “repeat percussion” feature on the tremolo. This amp is a bit of a hen’s tooth it was never officially in the catalogue.

All of those were made by the original Ampeg Everett Hull, founder and president. The following later units were made after Hull sold the company to Unimusic in early The Gemini V came a little later: It was a Gemini II with vibrato in addition to tremolo I’ve never heard it, but I understand that the vibrato circuit didn’t work terribly well ; later examples evidently had a little more power 35 watts as opposed to 30 and got both “ultra high” and “ultra low” switches.

As near as I can tell, the amps are different only in name. There are also a Gemini 22, which is nothing but a Gemini 15 amplifier section in a 2×12 cabinet, and a Gemini 20, which was the same thing with a pair of 10’s instead.

These codes can be found on speakers, transformers, pots, capacitors, and multi-section electrolytic “can” caps. Therefore, do not poke around in your old Ampeg if you are unfamiliar with amplifier electronics or their operation. A brief summary of the EIA system follows.
